Established in a domestic backyard in Wangi Wangi, in the Hunter Valley region, by Fred Black in 1976, the Group now boasts six businesses in four locations.

The grassroots manufacturing of long range tanks and 4WD accessories started in the Black family's backyard when Fred recognised the need for greater fuel capacity after a trip across the Nullabor. It was here that the Longranger brand was born. In 1979 the business had grown to need a dedicated location and moved to the Golden Fleece Service Station in Argenton. However, it was just seven years later, in 1986, that a site in Barnsley was purchased, and Out of Town 4WD opened its doors to sell 4WD accessories and Longranger tanks.
